Peak One and Mount Audubon

August 14th, 2011

Self portrait Summit of Peak One

I had a great few days off from work.  On Friday I walked up Peak One in the Tenmile Range of Colorado near Frisco.  Then on Saturday I took some friends from Florida up the SE Ridge of Audubon near Ward, CO in the Indian Peaks Wilderness.

Peak One Sepia version

I saw a cool looking snag on the way down from Peak One.

A Snag on the North Shoulder of Mount Victoria.

Here’s some images from Audubon:

Audubon from Mitchell Lake

The water was a bit more rough then last year, so I wasn’t able to get that stellar reflection.

Starting up the SE Ridge

The route ahead

One of my friends had only rock climbed once and the other one had never climbed before.  They both were superb on the crux section into and out of the notch.

Beyond the notch

The crux starts at the bench just left and above my friend’s heads on the opposite wall and ridge line behind.  From bench we traversed climber’s right and dropped into the notch and then climbed out the grass ledge system.

The long walk from the SE Shoulder to the summit and here we're only half way.

It was a most excellent adventure!  Until next time.

Tenmile Range Recon

August 4th, 2011

The journey started with work last night from 1700 – 0500 this A.M.  However, I awoke yesterday at 1330 prior to my shift.  Well, I worked my shift with no naps….I work in EMS if you didn’t already know.  EMS stands for “Earn Money Sleeping” atleast 50-60% of the time.

So once my shift ended this morning I blitzed up to Frisco’s Main st and I-70 trailhead parking for the Tenmile Range and arrived just prior to 0700.  The initial goal was Peak One or  Tenmile Peak to get a sense of the Tenmile Range Traverse.  I left my car at 0700 knowing that I had a possibility of T-storms around 1300.

The bike path start

It’s about a half mile towards Breck to the Royal trailhead.

A lot of interesting information about the old Masontown site.

The morning light was fabulous for taking shots of the dew on flowers.

Lots of blooming flower variety along the trail to Mount Royal and Mount Victoria

The hill wasn’t too bad

The views were….[edit]

amazing all day.  As I worked my way up the East side of the Mount Victoria I could look out over Frisco towards the Continental Divide.

Dillon and Frisco with Torrey's and Grays in the right distance

Parting shot back towards Peak one and Mount Victoria on the descent

All in all,  it took 44 mins to get to the top of mount Royal and 2.5 hrs to get to the false summit of Peak 1 where I turned around.  Another 1.5 hrs back to the car and then I trip over to David’s restaurant Food Hedz where I talked climbing with David and then refueled a little for the drive home.  For some reason I couldn’t sleep and was awake until 0130 this morning for a total of 36 hrs awake after I finally fell asleep I slept 11 hours.  If you’re ever in the Frisco, Silverthorne, Breckenridge or even Cooper and Vail mountain areas Food Hedz is certainly worth a stop.

American Alpine Club

July 31st, 2011

The new American Alpine Club

The American Alpine Club (AAC) has some sweet new ideas sprouting into a gold mine of new support for it’s members and non-members.  This new gauntlet runs from the “Choss Boss” photo contests  for every photographer out there to great rescue insurance.

The new member benefits for May 2011

(Note at time of publish: Some of the above links from AAC may not work)

Another cool thing the AAC is doing to connect with the climbing public.  They are showing up to  climbing events like the Zanskar Odyessy film premier that took place at the Eldorado Springs Art Center.

The AAC at the Zanskar Odyssey Premier

One the other new things the AAC is doing.  They are cutting down on surplus by only printing the American Alpine Journal (AAJ) for it’s members in the future.  This is a good thing since most the books they print end up sitting on a shelf not purchased, therefore not helping the club funding and also wasting product and time that could have been spent in a more useful manner.  Besides, the AAJ is available online after the print issue has been out.
